Well, the 3 red blinking lights happened to my friend so he went and bought some pieces and payed for some video's on a website that show how to fix it. He asked me to help so today I went over so we could fix the Xbox. Basicly we just disassembled it, took out two pieces and reapplied thermal paste on the heatsinks. We had putting the heatsinks back because, the nylon washers he got were too big... so we used normal ones(risking a short circuit.) We then ran out of washers but found some other ones that we had to force on to the screws. Once completed we put the CD drive back in and ran it...... 3 red...and then 2 red = failure , 2 = overheat. The fans werent in so they were supposed to overheat but not so soon, we retightened heat sinks and tried again.... 3 red.....3 minutes.... xbox wouldent shut off..... failure!!! we were soo pissed , then we tried again and....GREEN = good to go! , so we ran it to let it heat up and melt some soder a little then put everything back in it and reassembled, It ran perfectly! SUCESS!
PS: we didnt send it to microsoft because that would cost like 150$ not under warranty

Well done! I wonder how long this will last. There are two scenarios: Either it fails quickly, or Microsoft is worse at making hardware than you guys. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised by either.

I'm pretty sure the warranty is only at the store you bought it, when warranty is over you can send it in at microsoft and get a new one/yours repaired for free.

I hope it wasnt over 3 years old... "As of today, all Xbox 360 consoles are covered by an enhanced warranty program to address specifically the general hardware failures indicated by the three flashing red lights on the console. This applies to new and previously-sold consoles. While we will still have a general one year console warranty (two years in some countries), we are announcing today a three-year warranty that covers any console that displays a three flashing red lights error message. If a customer has an issue indicated by the three flashing red lights, Microsoft will repair the console free of charge-including shipping-for three years from the console's purchase date. We will also retroactively reimburse any of you who paid for repairs related to problems indicated by this error message in the past. In doing so, Microsoft stands behind its products and takes responsibility to ensure that every Xbox 360 console owner continues to have a fantastic gaming experience."

i got it several months ago, and i sent it to be repaired. it came back very quickly, but within a few weeks it froze every time i played a game. i tried to send it off again, but they made a mistake with UPS and they couldnt take it cos M$ didnt telll UPS that it was to be collected. eventually it got taken, and was back in just over a week. i asked the UPS driver how many xboxs they have to take, and he said that its about 4 every day! i then asked him how much they cahrge M$ and he said £15 each ($30)

There was a power surge at my house the other day and I got the 3 red lights, so I unplugged it and 5 minutes later it was working. My friend had the same problem yours did, but the metal washers he used did short the thing out.
