I'm going off to college in a few months and my parents offered to buy me either a new desktop or a laptop. Currently I can't decide; I'd like a new desktop so I can play nextgen PC games while off at college, but the mobility of a laptop is unsurmountable. Gaming laptops cost over $1000 if you want to be able to play nextgen games. I'm not sure how much a new desktop would cost but i'd like a dualcore processor w/ 2gig ram and an nvidia 8600gt along with a new motherboard, which would probably run me up to around $1000 which is around what my budget is.

get a nice powerful desktop for everything, and buy a cheap laptop for that portability. i've got what was a high-end laptop and its not too great for gaming. i will later buy a powerful desktop and keep this for the portability.
you'll need to think about just how much u really need the portability

alright, well first off, 8600gt is by not means nextgen... secondly, a "nextgen" desktop will run you well over 1000 bucks... but honestly, i would go with a desktop, doesn't get outdated as fast as you jcan just buy new parts, doesn't really work with a laptop...

I love having a powerful laptop (I'm typing this one at the moment), but a good laptop will cost more money than a good desktop by a wide margin. One thing many people forget when talking about laptops is battery life, thinking it doesn't matter. They're wrong. It does matter, trust me on this one. Being able to compute outdoors or on a train is a Good Thing™. I know I won't be able to get most of you folks on this site to buy a Mac, but I will do everything in my power to keep you away from laptops with less than three hours running time on battery.
So if you need portability, the choices are between a really good laptop, or a really good PC and a rather cheap laptop. Depending on what you take, both solutions could end up costing nearly the same. I was in the same situation and took the really good laptop, but that's because I already have another good desktop iMac standing around. If both solutions are too expensive for you, and games are important, then you're probably best served with a desktop computer.

My computer was $845 it has an 8800GTS and E6750 core 2 duo, some awesome motherboard and 2 gigs of ram, case, powersupply, Yet I already had a sound card so...
If only I waited a month or two the 8800GT is cheaper and faster and also the much faster 8400 core 2 duo and was the same price as my E6750
